we had to create an image for our postcards/zine/website that will form part of the exhibition. along with it we had to submit some text.
in all honesty, i didnt know what to write. i’m half way through finishing both my pieces and so i couldnt talk about them fully as much as i wanted.
i also realised i didnt have names for the pieces. i ended up calling them untitled 1 and untitled 2 because.. well.. i dont want a title to constrain what the audience could interpret from it. if i gave the pieces a name, i felt it would go against my semiotic theory. the whole “cat” explaination where a world is communicated and the meaning changes due to the person’s experience/connection with that particular word. i’m hoping by calling it untitled 1 and 2 that the person would be open to feel and see the piece in their own way without me interfering with that connection.
i’m also aware that i havent really posted up any pictures on this blog. it lacks ALOT of images. i hope to rectify this as soon as possible.
for now, let me offer you my postcard image:
The image is based on my second piece “untitled 2″ where it depicts the user and their interaction with my piece.
initally i wanted the piece to be on a blank white wall but that will be projected and their body movements would interact with the space and activate certain sounds that i’d have coded onto the white screen.
but after giving some thought into this; i’ve realised that what happens if i’m given a dark room? or that my wall isnt perfect from blemishes? would that detract the user and draw their attention to that zone of the interactive piece?
so i’m going to make some circles to demonstrate the zones that they can play with and also it will allow for a more visual connection with the piece for my hearing-impaired users.
the image is based on dots because my whole work is going to be using circles. why? because musical notation is based on circles and lines and i felt that circles/dots would be a good direct connection to it. i forgot the semiotic meaning to circles so i will have to blog about that later as a separate post.
the image highlights the points that the user has interacted with the wall. namely the hands and what could be the ears ( right hand disappears behind head so that it’s open to interpretation). i want the user to be the composer of the piece; hence the hands being the focal point. i want the user to be aware of the music being generated subconsciously – hence the ears. the visuals will enhance the beats and mood.. i just hope the users will understand my piece.
