Andrew Stiff

Bi may be with you in a couple of mins

May Promjiem
12:59
sure thing andy :)

Andrew Stiff
1:02
OK so how is it going?

May Promjiem
1:02
hmmm ok i guess

i’ve done the essay and the symposium ( sorry it was late)
1:03

Andrew Stiff
1:03
no worries

May Promjiem
1:03
and the flash piece is finished so now just the interactive one

but i’ve decided that i might discard processing and go with Flash or max msp
1:03

as the processing code is just too confusing and i have a friend who studied Max msp so he said he can help me out with code if i get stuck
1:03

Andrew Stiff
1:04
OK – what i would advise is be aware you will be using college computers so we do not have MAX/MSP and we do not have the very latest flash -  just in case

May Promjiem
1:04
the flash option is only because i’m more familiar with flash and i can kind of understand it better looking at it from a flash perspective. but just that flash isnt catered to playing lots of soundtracks so i’m not entirely sure. still in development process i guess

yup that’s fine. I will export as a .exe or standalone. might upload to my website too just in case as a failsafe
1:05

Andrew Stiff
1:05
we can install pure data – which is the open source max – written by the same guy who wrote max

May Promjiem
1:05
ah ok cool :)

Andrew Stiff
1:06
yes good idea -  again we may have issues loading a .exe

May Promjiem
1:06
i just need to figure out quickly which program out of Max and Flash would work best

ok. worse comes to worse i can leave my laptop at the show
1:06

Andrew Stiff
1:07
is all the info on your blog?

May Promjiem
1:07
not at the moment no. i’m behind on my blogging but have scribbled out what posts to do

the final date for update of blog posts is 5th .. is that correct?
1:07

and the final project work handing in – is that 29th or 5th? as there seems to be a leeway between the two?
1:07

Andrew Stiff
1:08
yes – if it was i may be able to advise, or even ask a favour form a colleague ed to see if he has any idas

May Promjiem
1:08
oh and i’ve got a whole sketchbook full of drawings/sketches that i’ve done.. do i need to scan all the pages onto my blog to evidence that?

Andrew Stiff
1:08
with the processing where are you at -  or rather where are you struggling?

would be good – but edit them so not all only the relevant ones
1:09

May Promjiem
1:09
ok although the whole sketchbook is a series of drawings of circles and placements.. so they kind of show development of ideas of placement of the dots in relation to the white space

Andrew Stiff
1:10
the show build satrts on the 29th -  the work needs to be insatlled by first thing 6th July thats when we assess

May Promjiem
1:10
but i’ll choose some to kind of give an indication as to what’s what. i will be showing the book anyway as part of my exhibition

ah ok. that’s fine then. i am hoping to have it done by 29th or thereabouts and just fiddle with positioning at the show build with the projector/webcam
1:10

Andrew Stiff
1:10
include all if relebvant -  remeber to disucss them – so they have a context in the blog

May Promjiem
1:11
the processing – i’m stuck with OOP and trying to figure out the camera detection via webcam when the dots are “moused over” with the person’s shadow

yup sure thing.. i am going to do a post on the sketchbook to link it into the artwork pieces
1:11

Andrew Stiff
1:11
did you look at jmyron?

May Promjiem
1:12
yup

but initially i wanted the shadow to not be present on screen
1:12

hence my confusion as i didnt want the user’s shadow to cast onto the dots but rather the dots form a kind of swarm around the person’s shadow
1:13

but now i’m going to put it on a black background as it’s probably easier that way to detect and also the room is dark and the set up of the projector would be less difficult
1:13

Andrew Stiff
1:13
do you mean outline?

May Promjiem
1:13
their shadow as a whole

Andrew Stiff
1:14
have you considered the lighting? which room are you in?

May Promjiem
1:14
so if it were a white background piece, the projector would have to be above and the webcam behind them but then the webcam would have to somehow eliminate the shadow

i’m in the dark space
1:14

Andrew Stiff
1:14
so there may not be much shaddow

May Promjiem
1:15
i’ve asked for the small room next to my space too but not sure what’s going on with that as i think another girl wants the room to show her dress which is related to sound and lighting etc.. ( cant remember her name)

yup; i will do it on a black background now and use white dots. also that will be a complete reflection of the flash piece too as teh flash piece is white background with black dots
1:15

Andrew Stiff
1:16
i think that s julia -  my undertanding is she has been given that space

May Promjiem
1:16
ohhh ok

Andrew Stiff
1:16
best to check with Ina

May Promjiem
1:16
hmm.. i’m sure it’ll be ok….

Andrew Stiff
1:16
as i am not involved in the curation

May Promjiem
1:16
i’ve only got 2 pieces to set up .. both use computers so it shoudl be ok

yup that’s fine. there was banter and debate about it but nothing decided. i will ask ina later to confirm :)
1:17

Andrew Stiff
1:17
there will be ambient light -  you will have isaac next to you i think?

he is using lights and projection
1:17

so there wil be ambient light
1:17

May Promjiem
1:17
ah ok cool ^^

Andrew Stiff
1:17
OK are you using college computers ?

and did you send a spec?
1:18

we do not have webcams on th epc’s
1:18

May Promjiem
1:18
i asked for college computers and a list of techs that i need

Andrew Stiff
1:18
OK could you meail to me as well – i may need to ensure we can support you OK

;-)
1:18

May Promjiem
1:19
ah ok sure thing. i think it’s just basic hardware stuff. i have 2 laptops so can just use those if the ones at uni cant run them ;) but will send u specs :D

Andrew Stiff
1:19
ok good you have a backup

May Promjiem
1:21
so is there anything i need to do additonally ?

on my list is to blog and catch up on those
1:21

also to show the survey results
1:21

to scan the sketchbook images
1:21

to blog on the processing/flash/max mxp debate
1:21

to blog on each of the final works separately
1:22

oh.. that’s what i forgot.. the symposium stuff
1:22

should i just blog my responses to everyone’s symposiums?
1:22

so like do 1 blog post for onliners’ symposiums and then another blog post for the FT/PT2 symposiums?
1:23

Andrew Stiff
1:23
blimey your organised ;-)

symposium we wil do your stoday, if you could comment on the others hats fine
1:23

May Promjiem
1:23
hahaha

ok cool ^^ thank u
1:23

Andrew Stiff
1:24
blogs are the key ;-) they should be the focus for everything

May Promjiem
1:24
it’s not 5 mins long as i did quick tweens for the text and thought ppl could pause/play to read the text fully that for me to define a timescale for reading .. if that makes sense

do the blogs need to be image heavy?
1:24

Andrew Stiff
1:24
i think you have good sense of what you need  -  and make your judgemnent based on that

May Promjiem
1:25
as in; is it sufficient to comment and only use images for reference or should i put in lots of images to give a better indication of what i’m on about and to make the blog look more ‘interesting’ lol

Andrew Stiff
1:25
images are good becuase they explain alot -  accompanied with reflections on the image its ideal

so your response to the image why / how / etc.
1:25

May Promjiem
1:26
ok

Andrew Stiff
1:26
the blogs is interesting what we are looking for is what you understand you have learnt

hebnce the curation – we can discuss the breifing sheet today
1:26

May Promjiem
1:27
ok sure

Andrew Stiff
1:27
the assessmnet will run like unit 1

a page etc.
1:27

May Promjiem
1:27
yup sure thing

Andrew Stiff
1:27
ok

May Promjiem
1:28
so then we dont need to write anything else for the curation?

Andrew Stiff
1:28
so have you bene lat out on this?

May Promjiem
1:28
just links to evidence

Andrew Stiff
1:28
been falt out on this – this should read ;-)

yes links and some written ‘context’
1:28

May Promjiem
1:28
sure thing

Andrew Stiff
1:29
for the links -  whay that particualr peice of evidence etc.

May Promjiem
1:29
i think the main part was reading the Procesing book and trying to learn it in such a short space of time. i got feedback from the forums and also Matthjis about where to start and where to go from there

he was really helpful ( ah i need to add a blog post on him too)
1:29

but then as Processing has lots of plugins and stuff, it became a bit confusing where one starts and ends and how they all slot in together – OpenGL, Minim, Sonia, blah blah
1:30

Andrew Stiff
1:30
Matthjis?

May Promjiem
1:30
oh.. i emailed him based on one of his artworks

Andrew Stiff
1:30
ok ;-)

May Promjiem
1:30
http://vimeo.com/3661868

he created this and i wanted to know how he eliminated the shadow of the user
1:31

and the swarm effect as i wanted to create something simliar to that in terms of look and movement
1:31

Andrew Stiff
1:32
this lokks good

May Promjiem
1:32
yup. he said he created it using processing and tracking the black/white colour

and that there is a human shadow there but that it’s in a dimlit room so u cant see it
1:32

and he said to check out video detection of the pixels, then to use Sonia for the swarms and he gave me a link to some site about OOP that he used to create the swarm motion
1:33

very helpful but was a bit complex when it hit the OOP stuff >_<
1:33

Andrew Stiff
1:33
porcessing has its own swarm examples

built in did you see them?
1:33

OK better get onto the main chat
1:34

May Promjiem
1:35
yup but they were a bit blocky 80′s graphics lol

ok sure.. thank u for the tutorial :)
1:35

Andrew Stiff
1:36
OK May – email me if you have more questions

May Promjiem
1:37
yup sure thing andy.. thank you! :D
