1w88(2w38) symposium outcomes

Here were the responses that I recieved from my symposium when i conducted it with my online class:

May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
8:46
guys.. can i possibly do my symposium with u guys?
Anna-Leiza Barthorpe (abarthorpe_tmp)
8:46
You can do it Hassen!
Rabhia Saeeda (rabhia)
8:46
naw not a chance
Hassen Husain (hassen)
8:46
sure, I don’t mind at all
Anna-Leiza Barthorpe (abarthorpe_tmp)
8:47
yep – go for it May!
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
8:47
thanks guys

8:47
u might have to pause to read teh text as i didnt accommodate well for that ;) lol
8:47
Rabhia Saeeda (rabhia)
8:47
hey I said not?;)
Anna-Leiza Barthorpe (abarthorpe_tmp)
8:47
I see you went to the same speed-reading course as me!
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
8:48
hahaha
Anna-Leiza Barthorpe (abarthorpe_tmp)
8:48
;)
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
8:48
lol
Hassen Husain (hassen)
8:48
lol
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
8:48
i have a feeling we’re all a little high from the stress today! :-p
Anna-Leiza Barthorpe (abarthorpe_tmp)
8:48
Oh yes!
Hassen Husain (hassen)
8:48
i agree!
Susan Mortimer (smortimer2)
8:49
:)
Andrew Stiff (astiff)
8:49
OK sorry i had to pop to the loo
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
8:50
no problem andy. i’m just getting the class to take a look at my symposium
Rabhia Saeeda (rabhia)
8:50
u loose 10 credits for that
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
8:50
lol
Andrew Stiff (astiff)
8:50
so i just wanted to go over key dates and assessmnt format etc.
just so you are all really clear
8:50
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
8:50
sure thing
Rabhia Saeeda (rabhia)
8:50
were watching may’s syposium at the moment
Andrew Stiff (astiff)
8:51
OK May would you like to do the symposium first?
OK brilliant
8:51
Rabhia Saeeda (rabhia)
8:51
hey I can’t read that fast,only superman could,and he’s not here
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
8:51
hehehe
Rabhia Saeeda (rabhia)
8:52
okay any thoughts anyone
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
8:53
oh btw, the blue dot piece isnt playing the actual track i’m using
Anna-Leiza Barthorpe (abarthorpe_tmp)
8:53
I’m really impressed. I think it is a fantastic project – very ‘of the moment’ too
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
8:53
aww thank u.. i just hope it gets done in time
@_@
8:53
Anna-Leiza Barthorpe (abarthorpe_tmp)
8:53
So there are two parts to it right?
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
8:53
there are 2 pieces that are responses to each other
Hassen Husain (hassen)
8:53
lots of theory went into the practice – i think that’s a good way to go. Lots of practical
examples which I think goesa long way. Leiza’s right – very in tune with what’s going on
Anna-Leiza Barthorpe (abarthorpe_tmp)
8:54
how will the two be displayed?
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
8:54
one is a flash piece that is a direct translation of an MP3 track ( i’ve split up each
instrumental piece into different tracks and have 6 dots animating the differnet parts
Hassen Husain (hassen)
8:54
ah neat!
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
8:54
then a frequency graphic line below to indicate the track’s amplitude at the same time to
bring it all together
then the other piece is a response that is based on john cage’s silent musical piece 4:33
where there is nothing written but silence
8:55
Anna-Leiza Barthorpe (abarthorpe_tmp)
8:55
are you still having the silent headphones?
I think, you emntioned that previously?
8:55
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
8:55
so the user is the composer and by interacting with the wall, it fulfils roger’s convergence
model of communication where sender and reciever have to both communicate in order
to come to a better understanding
yup i think i will still use the headphones but i’m not sure if i will give them an option or
not of volume control
8:55
Rabhia Saeeda (rabhia)
8:55
But u can’t have silence ,you do know that ?
Hassen Husain (hassen)
8:56
why not Rabhia?
Anna-Leiza Barthorpe (abarthorpe_tmp)
8:56
silent headphones…
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
8:56
yup, rabhia, john cages’ 4:33 piece is based on telling ppl that there is no real silence
and that the music to that particular piece is whatever sound is occurring around u ;)
Anna-Leiza Barthorpe (abarthorpe_tmp)
8:56
ah yes
Hassen Husain (hassen)
8:56
oh i see
Anna-Leiza Barthorpe (abarthorpe_tmp)
8:56
clever
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
8:56
ah but his argument is that even in pure silence u hear a tone in your head
the resonance that is created between ur ears and the air
8:56
something like that :-p
8:57
lol
8:57
Anna-Leiza Barthorpe (abarthorpe_tmp)
8:57
mmm – what is that constant hum called?
Hassen Husain (hassen)
8:57
;)
Rabhia Saeeda (rabhia)
8:57
There is only one silence ,either it’s cause your deaf or cause your dead, everywhere else
there is alwaysa sound regardless of where you consider it a sound or a noise
Anna-Leiza Barthorpe (abarthorpe_tmp)
8:57
There was a place, I thnk New Mexico where people could hear a constant hum
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
8:57
hahahha rabhia
Hassen Husain (hassen)
8:58
Leiza – I would dread that!
Rabhia Saeeda (rabhia)
8:58
I ‘m hearing a bird twittering r=next to my window, and can hear the drone of distant
traffic
Anna-Leiza Barthorpe (abarthorpe_tmp)
8:58
I know! I go nuts at the radio alarm buzzing away at night!
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
8:58
i asked Brent in an interview, who’s partially deaf and can only hear high tones, what he
hears when he cant hear low sounding sounds
Hassen Husain (hassen)
8:58
I should listen to music with the volume adjusted to low – or i’ll lose my hearing or hear a
hum when I’m older
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
8:58
he says he can hear himself trying to sing along! that he pictures himself singing and
from that he can hear the tune in his head.. so basically he imagines sound in order to
immitate sound
very interesting and yet strange at the same time
8:59
Rabhia Saeeda (rabhia)
8:59
So u see u can’t have silence, only noise u choose to filter out
Hassen Husain (hassen)
8:59
i never knew that!
Anna-Leiza Barthorpe (abarthorpe_tmp)
8:59
really interesting
and hard to imagine for us
9:00
Susan Mortimer (smortimer2)
9:00
Is there sound in space then?
Rabhia Saeeda (rabhia)
9:00
so r u having the headphone which won’t be silent?
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
9:00
yeah it’s weird
i might have headphones and put the volume on default mute
9:00
Anna-Leiza Barthorpe (abarthorpe_tmp)
9:00
only when the martians are acting up!
:D
9:00
Susan Mortimer (smortimer2)
9:00
;)
Rabhia Saeeda (rabhia)
9:01
And if so,they definelty won’t be,because of the crowds of people coming to see thes how
we hope
9:01
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
9:01
cos in my survey question i asked ppl would it bug them if they watched a music video
with the sound off and would they attempt to try to find a way to play the sound
and most responded yes! they’d keep trying to find a way to play the sound! lol
9:01
Andrew Stiff (astiff)
9:01
apologies – qulaity office interupted me there ….
Rabhia Saeeda (rabhia)
9:02
don’t know depends if u know it well,u can watch it without the sound and quite happily
sing the words in anyway
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
9:02
kind of like a tour i went on when i was a kid in sschool. it was based on blind ppl and
we had to go around this centre that was in complete darkness with canes so that we coul
dsee what it’s like to be blind
and we were in a room that was supposed to be a living room. we all felt a tv and could
hear the sound but no image and we were all trying to find a way to get the image up! lol
9:02
Rabhia Saeeda (rabhia)
9:02
quality-r they count how many students in each room again, cause we don’t count, being
nit there.
not even
9:02
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
9:03
the piece is a track my friend wrote and composed so hopefully no one will know
the sound but i want them to be able to deciper the type of song. i guess it’s more an
emotional connection rather than a literal ” this is the dot that shows the bass part” kinda
translation
Anna-Leiza Barthorpe (abarthorpe_tmp)
9:03
/O I liek that idea
Rabhia Saeeda (rabhia)
9:03
do we think that dots can have emotions too
Anna-Leiza Barthorpe (abarthorpe_tmp)
9:03
that they have to decipher the song
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
9:04
cos most ppl who responded in the survey say they either remember the catchy tune or
some even that they associate with it emotionally
hence why i didnt animate the lyrics.. cos the lyrics only work better with the sound and
that the sound makes the music.. if that makes sense
9:04
Anna-Leiza Barthorpe (abarthorpe_tmp)
9:04
back in a mo
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
9:04

crap i forgot to tell u guys this.. it’s kind of what i’m trying to accomplish with the 2nd
interactive piece
9:05
Rabhia Saeeda (rabhia)
9:05
I don’t know I spent years sing ing the wrong words to some songs and find out the right
wors kind of ruined them for me
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
9:05
except mine will be dots and each dot would have a different track on it so when the
user’s body touches a certain dot, that dot plays a certain sound.
Susan Mortimer (smortimer2)
9:06
thats really exciting!
Hassen Husain (hassen)
9:06
oh wow May!
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
9:06
lol rabhia there’s some website that talks about that! lots of ppl mishear lyrics for what
they actually are
oh and mine wont look as great as that.. just white dots on black background ;)
9:06
Rabhia Saeeda (rabhia)
9:06
naw I just think my words are more interesting
Hassen Husain (hassen)
9:07
;)
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
9:07
hehehe
Rabhia Saeeda (rabhia)
9:07
so how lomg is it going to be?
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
9:07
it’ll just be a constant loop animation as it’ll use webcam interaction and output in real-
time capture
that’s the plan anyway ;)
9:07
Hassen Husain (hassen)
9:08
neat!
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
9:08
so the dots will just swarm around till someone interacts with it and then sounds will play
oh rabhia.. good point! u just made me think of something! what’ll happen during no
interaction! doh!
9:08
Rabhia Saeeda (rabhia)
9:08
like a shoal of fish
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
9:08
hmm.. i have to think about that part! thank u!!
Rabhia Saeeda (rabhia)
9:09
maybe they could be moving slowly
if they were still then it would looklike that how thyew ere meant to be
9:09
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
9:10
yup.. maybe they’ll move slowly and play a generic ambient song in the meantime
or some generic beat.. or maybe no sound?
9:10
Rabhia Saeeda (rabhia)
9:10
or the sound in reverse
like playing a cassette in rewind and play at the same time
9:10
Anna-Leiza Barthorpe (abarthorpe_tmp)
9:11
no sound I was imagining
Rabhia Saeeda (rabhia)
9:11
naw ,that’s boring, sorry be hanging out with my niece and everything is always boring
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
9:11
yeah.. i think the no sound is quite a good one cos then 1) i wont be interfering with other
ppl’s works during no interaction time on my work
2) it will be a good surprise for when they do interact with the wall
9:12
Anna-Leiza Barthorpe (abarthorpe_tmp)
9:12
My niece would say that’s pants!
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
9:12
3) on discovery of sound; they mite want to play around with it more to further explore it
Anna-Leiza Barthorpe (abarthorpe_tmp)
9:12
My daughetr would say it’s poo poo!!
Sorry – regressing here!
9:12
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
9:12
hahaha
Anna-Leiza Barthorpe (abarthorpe_tmp)
9:12
and digresssing!”
Rabhia Saeeda (rabhia)
9:12
I think if mine said that,I’d have words with her mum
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
9:12
my housemates call me poo baby!
Andrew Stiff (astiff)
9:13
Sorry May i am loking at processing – i have seen some examples that are remarbly
somilr that may help
Hassen Husain (hassen)
9:13
you guys are so hilarious!
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
9:13
( not that i poop myself or anything but rather my lack of pooping in a week in
comparison to their pooping actions) lol
Anna-Leiza Barthorpe (abarthorpe_tmp)
9:13
:D
too much information!
9:13
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
9:13
yeah :/ i just realised that too Leiza ;)
Rabhia Saeeda (rabhia)
9:13
yeah Hassen, and you love u all really and we’re one of your ten thousand facebook
closest friends
Anna-Leiza Barthorpe (abarthorpe_tmp)
9:14
keep having the fiber!
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
9:14
lol
Hassen Husain (hassen)
9:14
;) Rabhia
that’s hilarious Leiza!
9:14
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
9:14
cool Andy.. i ran a search in open processing and i found some examples but they
didnt involve webcam interaction so i was a bit confused where to chop and paste code
together
Rabhia Saeeda (rabhia)
9:14
sorry I’m distracted, but what happen at the end, how do you know if the work worked?
May
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
9:15
hmm.. good point rabhia
i havent thought about that
9:15
i guess i’d have to record it or something to see if it did work or not
9:15
Andrew Stiff (astiff)
9:15
basically what you need to find is the follow mouse examples and then use blob detection
as a replcement for the mouse
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
9:15
i was just hoping that they’d figure out what dot plays what sound and then can compose
tracks from that
ahhhh.. i was focusing on the whole webcam optical flow kinda thingy
9:16
Rabhia Saeeda (rabhia)
9:16
Naw that’s the wrong answer, what your suppose to say ,is learning is a on going process
and not a definative moment,I pragising my own essay
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
9:16
all this augmented reality and minority report-type stuff gets confusing and all seem the
same >_<
Andrew Stiff (astiff)
9:16
ow thats an a grdae commen Rabhia ‘-)
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
9:17
HAHAHAHAH
Rabhia Saeeda (rabhia)
9:17
I know sometimes it happen;)
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
9:17
i like that! i’m going to steal that if we do a follow-up written ;)
Susan Mortimer (smortimer2)
9:17
Sorry all I’m haveing trouble this end with the printer and missing bits
Apologies May.
9:17
Its a great project
9:18
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
9:18
(“learning is a on going process and not a definative moment” Rabhia Saeeda, 22/06/10)
Rabhia Saeeda (rabhia)
9:18
that’s cool
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
9:18
no problem at all susan :) thank u for ur email feedback already so that’s cool ^^
Andrew Stiff (astiff)
9:18
copyright it quick ;-)
Hassen Husain (hassen)
9:18
;) Andy!
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
9:18
lol
ok guys.. i have to leave in 10mins
9:18
so shall we discuss other things :)
9:19
Thank you all for your comments and feedback :)
9:19
Rabhia Saeeda (rabhia)
9:19
I think I wrote learning is a journey and not a final destination
Andrew Stiff (astiff)
9:20
even better – you been studying poetry?
Hassen Husain (hassen)
9:20
;)
Rabhia Saeeda (rabhia)
9:20
yeah Andy where have u been 4 the last two years?;)
Anna-Leiza Barthorpe (abarthorpe_tmp)
9:21
Doesn’t feel like two years to me really
Hassen Husain (hassen)
9:21
me neither!
Andrew Stiff (astiff)
9:21
OK – so any more comments for May?
Anna-Leiza Barthorpe (abarthorpe_tmp)
9:21
I’m a little sad
Rabhia Saeeda (rabhia)
9:21
I know-iit’s rather sad
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
9:22
yup.. end of an era :’(
Rabhia Saeeda (rabhia)
9:22
We love u may we really do-and world peace:p
Hassen Husain (hassen)
9:22
it really is an end of an era!
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
9:22
hahah
andy do u wanna go over dates so that we’re all clear?
9:23
Rabhia Saeeda (rabhia)
9:23
I wondered if I could gatecrash the next couple of minutes
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
9:23
hassen.. when u send over the archive can u also paste in the dates into the email too
please so ppl who arent here today can know too :)
Hassen Husain (hassen)
9:23
yep sure thing!
May Promjiem (promjiem_tmp)
9:23
thank u :)
Hassen Husain (hassen)
9:24
no problem at all May ;)

Rabhia’s comment about what would happen to the interactive piece during no interaction definitely shed some light. I totally didn’t think about that option at all. I always had envisaged in my mind that people would be constantly interacting with it.

It made me think of a swarming affect that could occur during the waiting period for when someone eventually arrives and interacts with the wall. It could be symbolic of the music pieces inter-twining with itself and creating it’s own piece.

It was definitely a good point and something that I really didn’t think to consider at all. I am so grateful for Rabhia for pointing that out to me and also for all the comments that I recieved from my peers as they definitely did highlight points that I didn’t think about.

It’s always good to have external opinions as sometimes you work so closely to something that you focus on certain flaws and are blindsighted to the other flaws that could exist or other options that could be available to you.

I also recieved this response from Susan about my symposium piece that was done via email:

Hi May

thanks for sending the link for your symposium.

What  really stands out in your project for me is that you are tackling issues of inclusiveness and disability and finding positive responses through your work to these issues.

Your plans for the future direction of your work sound great: Smart lab and possible research with them and contributing back to open source community.

I wondered if the music for your show piece would be the same as that on your symposium clip? If the choice of music will affect the type of visuals you employ and it will be interseting to see how different music forms will affect the visuals as they are not to be purely reactive to the music in terms of responding to sound waves/beats/volume/complexity?

Think this is a really exciting project, aplogies for not being more on the ball, my head is all over the place from show stuff!
It will be great to see your project at the final show.

Best
Susan x

I forgot to add that the pieces that were displayed within the symposium were just test run pieces that weren’t finalised yet. It would be interesting to take this project further and explore what could be done with music of different languages, different types of music and also perhaps just different beats and outputs from which music is played from.
